The San Antonio Spurs have been a serious bidder for the talents of Pau Gasol, the former Los Angeles Lakers low-post presence that continues to eye a number of possible destinations for next year. But rumors haven’t been kind to the Spurs’ chances, hinting that Gasol is leaning in the direction of the Chicago Bulls.
While absolutely nothing has transpired and this is mostly speculation, Gasol needs San Antonio more than they need him. The versatile forward with the unique skill set can help a team win; he has never been the key to winning for a team. Not nabbing the 34 year-old veteran won’t break the Spurs’ chances at sitting atop the stacked Western Conference once again, which is a reality Gasol needs to consider.
Somewhere after winning two NBA championships with the Lakers, Gasol’s stock began to fall and so did his passion for the game. Between playing for four different coaches, losing Kobe Bryant to injury, and trade rumors, Gasol has been a shell of himself for quite some time now. San Antonio would easily be a place where he could reinvent himself.
There is not much waiting in Chicago for Gasol to dive into except unfulfilled potential and an uncertain future. Derrick Rose’s knee issues are mired in doubt after the past two seasons and besides Joakim Noah, the Bulls lineup has not been proven. The fact that the Eastern Conference may be ripe for the picking, depending on where LeBron James decides to go, could be the only legitimate reason Gasol would choose Chicago.
Nonetheless, San Antonio has recovered all the basic pieces needed to continue their reign — the proverbial ball is in Gasol’s court now and his future lies in the midst of the free agency spectacle.
