The top free agent still available on the board is Pau Gasol. Sure, Carmelo Anthony is still the big fish, but it appears he will most likely re-sign with the New York Knicks. At this point, Gasol is the man teams are after, and it looks like the Chicago Bulls are the clear frontrunner to sign the big man.
The Spanish newspaper Marca reported late Friday night that the Bulls are finalizing a deal that will make Gasol their new center. Clearly, this is great news for Chicago, as they need someone in the frontcourt to pair with Joakim Noah. In fact, the combination of the two around the basket might just be exactly what the Bulls have been missing the last few years.
The San Antonio Spurs are another team that is said to be in on the Gasol sweepstakes. Most people would agree that the Spurs are probably the better fit for him considering all of the foreign players and the style of basketball the team runs. However, Gasol appears to have his eyes set on Chicago. Of course, the reason is unknown, but one can assume it has to do with the amount of money the Bulls are ready to offer.
At this point, no one can blame Gasol for wanting to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, despite the team offering him a two-year, $23 million contract and a three-year, $29 million deal. The Lakers have used him as trade bait for far too long. Not to mention, it never seemed they full appreciated his presence in Los Angeles. Gasol is much better off moving on to a new team, especially one that desperately needs his services and are willing to pay him big money for it.
The 34-year-old averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest in 60 games last season.
