5 Reasons Why Carmelo Anthony Won’t Be Happy with New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony: 5 Reasons Why He Won't Be Happy with New York Knicks

In the end, Carmelo Anthony chose the money and signed with the New York Knicks instead of the Chicago Bulls. It's hard to blame him; the difference between the two teams' offers was around $50 million. Still, money can't buy happiness, and a huge contract won't be enough on its own to make Anthony content with his decision. Here are 5 reasons why he won't be happy playing in New York.

5. Pressure in New York

The Knicks haven't been a popular destination for star free agents lately, which makes their plan to splurge in 2016 a bit dicey. Anthony could very well spend the duration of his contract as the team's only true star. The pressure that comes along with that is considerable.

Nothing will stop Anthony from looking a few hundred miles away towards Chicago every now and then and seeing the team he could have been with. It's all but written in stone that the Bulls will be a much better team than the Knicks for at least the next several years. Counterfactual thinking is an inevitability for Carmelo, and those thoughts aren't going to be very positive.

Derek Fisher is a mystery at head coach at this point; all anyone does know is that he's Phil Jackson's puppet. Anthony has clashed with several of his past bench bosses, and it's very conceivable that it could happen again.

2. Friction with Phil Jackson

Jackson carries himself and speaks like the alpha male in every room he's in, a self-concept that is certainly understandable given his vast success in the world of basketball. Over time, however, this is a personality that will very likely cause some friction between him and Anthony. Jackson won a ton of games as an NBA coach, but he's also well-known for not having the greatest relationships with some of his star players.

The Knicks don't have any blue chip young players in their organization, and various terrible trades from the past have them a bit low on future draft picks. The roster is essentially Anthony surrounded by trash in various stages of decomposition. New York will be awful in 2014-15 and will continue to be unless it attracts a major free agent in 2016.
