The Orlando Magic found their starting point guard in the 2014 NBA Draft by grabbing highly touted Elfrid Payton in a draft day trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. So now, the Magic have turned their attention to finding Payton’s backup in free agency.
That backup may be on his way. According to sources, Luke Ridnour will soon be taking his talents to Orlando. Ridnour has always been highly regarded as a stellar pass-first point guard who also have the uncanny ability to play off the ball.
This is the type of player that the Magic need to not only anchor the second unit, but to serve as a mentor — there’s that word again — to the young Payton. Ridnour can show Payton the ropes on how to be an NBA caliber point guard, and that could prove to be valuable to the Magic as it seems like they are fully turning the keys over to their young guns.
In addition to mentoring the young Payton, Ridnour will also serve as the floor leader for the veteran-laden second unit, and at this point in his career, this may be the best spot for him. He will be able to find Channing Frye and Evan Fournier for corner threes and look for his own shot.
Ridnour is yet another solid move for the Magic front office, as Orlando knew that it had to get a veteran point guard to make an impact on the young lineup.
