5 Reasons Why Lance Stephenson Will Fit With Charlotte Hornets

After spending almost half a month available to all 30 teams in NBA free agency, Lance Stephenson finally chose to sign with the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday for three years and $27.4 million. His out-of-control motor and his reputation as a hothead has some doubting this signing, but acquiring Stephenson looks to me like a solid move for Charlotte. Here are 5 reasons why he will fit with the Hornets.

Charlotte broke out of the cellar and became a playoff team last season, but nobody was fooled into thinking that the Hornets were fun to watch. Tossing Stephenson into the mix instantly makes Charlotte much more interesting, and the biggest beneficiary of this will be the team's fans.

Stephenson is one of the more athletic guards in the NBA, and he should fit in seamlessly alongside Kemba Walker. The Hornets will now have a starting backcourt with both players being adept at dribble penetration and finding teammates; last season it was just Walker who could manage that.

The Hornets attempted the fourth-fewest threes per game in 2013-14 and finished in the bottom ten in shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Stephenson, a rapidly improving perimeter player on offense, should help improve these numbers. He's also a stout perimeter defender, with his strength and length making it difficult for opposing guards to create when matched up against him.

2. Effort

Stephenson is a lot of things, but a slacker isn't one of them. If there's a loose ball, he'll be the first to dive on the floor for it (as pictured); this type of effort characterizes his entire game. If anything, Stephenson sometimes gets himself into a trouble by being a little more intense than he probably should be. He'll fit right in on an already hardworking Charlotte team.

If there is anyone in the basketball world who can command enough respect and authority to keep Stephenson in check, it's Michael Jordan. The Hornets' owner will undoubtedly be in his ear quite a bit during the early part of next season, and we'll see pretty quickly what the results of that are. It's hard to see any player — even one as wild as Stephenson — turning a deaf ear to Jordan.
