Training camp for Team USA begins Monday, as the players will get ready for the FIBA basketball World Cup this summer. Unfortunately, Team USA will be without one of their key players.

Superstar forward Kevin Love has decided that a risk of injury and the uncertainty surrounding the situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves are two big enough reasons why playing for Team USA simply is not a good idea. And in all honesty, one cannot blame the man.

The Cleveland Cavaliers still appear very interested in acquiring Love in a trade. However, that trade cannot happen for about a month due to the team signing No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins. Therefore, it is Love’s job to stay healthy and not do anything that could jeopardize the possibility of being traded. As unlikely as an injury is while playing in the World Cup, the fact is that it can happen. Love is not willing to take that risk with so much on the line.

If fans have not figured it out by now, Love wants out of Minnesota. He has informed the organization that he has no intentions of re-signing with the team in free agency next summer. For that reason, a trade is really the only option to turn a dismal situation into a decent one. Even if the Timberwolves lose Love, at least they will get something good in return.

The decision for Love to pull out of the World Cup definitely hurts Team USA. He is a great talent with a unique skill set for a big man, which is why he will certainly be missed. The good news is Team USA is loaded with so much talent that there is a good chance they can still win even without him.
