Recently, Andrew Wiggins told the media that he isn’t taking the Kevin Love trade rumors personally, and he shouldn’t. It’s not his fault anyway, but he may have to blame his parents if he gets traded. Why? It’s a “DW” thing — it must be. From the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat and then back to Cleveland, LeBron James appears to have a fetish for teammates with the initials D.W.
Just think about it for a moment. Delonte West and James spent three seasons together during James’ first stint in Cleveland. They had some pretty good years together, and West definitely benefited from James’ willingness to share the ball as he shot a career high in three-point field goals made (91) and three-point field goal percentage (.399) in the 2008-09, 66-win (franchise high) season.
James then went on to play with Dwyane Wade who appears to be one of his best friends in basketball. The two were inseparable in Miami, and their friendship can be described as nothing short of a bromance. Last month, Wade released a public statement to make it clear that even though James opted to wear a different uniform, the two are still going to remain friends.
“As a friend and a teammate, I am sad to see my brother LeBron leave to begin a new journey. In 2010, we decided to come together all for one goal — to win championships and we succeeded. We were friends when we first joined the league and created an unbreakable bond the past four years. Our collaboration will always be very special to me both personally and professionally.”
Now James has returned to Cleveland to play with Dion Waiters. Waiters was mentioned in James’ letter to northeast Ohio as a one of the young Cavs players that he wanted to help mentor and cultivate, however, Wiggins’ name was not mentioned.
So it appears that the Minnesota Timberwolves are just following NBA rules by waiting until Aug. 23 to acquire Wiggins in the Love trade. As the prefix — or the first two letters in his first name — indicate, “an” means without. So it looks like the Cavaliers will be “without” ‘Drew Wiggins just as fate had it all along.
Too bad his parents didn’t just name him Drew Wiggins. James might have approved.
