The Indiana Pacers are going to be in complete survival mode next season, and many are wondering what a successful campaign would be for them. A survival scenario would include them making the playoffs this year, building the confidence of their younger players and getting back a fully healthy Paul George by 2015. Here are five moves they should make during the rest of this offseason to ensure future victories.
Pacer fans probably do not want to hear this, but the 2015 NBA draft class is loaded. Larry Bird must be opposed to this idea, however punting next season might be the best course possible. Can you imagine Jahlil Okafor next to Roy Hibbert? We will mention him as well on the next slide.
This slide is a pretty scary proposition, which should strike fear into the hearts of many in Indianapolis. Roy Hibbert was a bum at times during last year's playoffs, but it is also true that the big man will probably play a lot better now that Lance Stephenson is out of the fold.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar worked with Hibbert over the summer, and there was even a fun legacy picture tweeted out that included those two and also Larry Bird. "The Legend" has not had the best summer to say the least, but signing Kareem to a position with the team would be a nice step towards success next year.
The Pacers have a shot at getting Shawn Marion, but the best general manger in the NBA, LeBron James, is making things happen quite quickly in Cleveland. News came out that Marion was in Ohio on Monday, and I can guarantee you that it was not for the scenery.
I still have not seen the replay of Paul George's injury and hope that I never will. He is a determined young man that I had the good fortune of interviewing in 2013, and all basketball junkies should be wishing him a full and speedy recovery. Pacer fans should see a healthy George in 2015, which could put them back into the playoff picture once again.
