Following Paul George’s leg injury and Kevin Durant's peculiar timing when deciding to pull out of consideration for a guaranteed spot on the team, the talk has predictably turned back to a push for the country to -- once again -- make their participation in the international game an amateur one. But with that resolution comes another set of problems, so I put together five reasons why USA Basketball should never go back to using college players.

One reason why USA Basketball should never go back to college players is the fact that young athletes would be putting themselves in added danger of damaging their NBA careers before they even get started.

Unlike the pre-Dream Team days, getting a quality group of college basketball players to represent the United States will be a crapshoot, because the quality ballers don’t stay in school long enough to be considered collegiate players. Most usually go from high school stars to pros too quick to represent the country as members of the NCAA. Not to mention, the top crop of amateur players have recently been international ones.

Players, teams and shoe companies would lose the largest, free advertising tool that could ever be provided to the NBA and its stars.

Not only that, but the league would also be in danger of dropping an opportunity to market their cornerstones to the entire world all at one time.

Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili, the Gasol brothers and others are all seasoned international players who are very well versed in the rules and sneaky tactics of FIBA basketball. It sounds like the college kids would be losing to a lot of teams with grown pros.
