Now that Lebron James has returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers, free agent players are flocking to Ohio to chase a championship along side the Chosen One. Recent reports have indicated that Shawn Marion looks to be the next player to jump onboard the James train. This would be a great marriage for both sides in that it will allow Marion to extend his career as an integral part of a relevant team and it will give the Cavaliers a defensive-minded small-forward to back up James at a position where they are lacking depth.
Marion brings a unique set of skills with his combination of athleticism, rebounding, shooting and defense. He can cover positions one through four on the floor and this versatility will allow rookie head coach David Blatt to mix and match his lineups, giving opponents different looks. At 36 years old, Marion can still get up and down the court and play above the rim, which spreads the floor and gives Kyrie Irving a dangerous running mate in transition. Lastly, Marion is an excellent rebounder for his position and will help add more firepower to an already strong rebounding team.
This move also makes sense for Marion. By heading to Cleveland, he will continue to play meaningful basketball into his twilight years, while not having to shoulder the heavy burden of being a main guy. His skill set is exactly what Cleveland needs an as such will allow him to do what he does best. On this team, he doesn’t need to score or be a focal point, he just needs to play defense, rebound the ball, and get out in transition.
It looks like Shawn Marion will be headed to Cleveland and by all accounts it seems to be a no-brainer. Week by week, free-agent after free-agent, the Cavs’ roster is getting stronger. By the time the season starts, they may be the favorites to take home the hardware.
