5 Things the Warriors Need David Lee to Improve During the 2014-15 Season

David Lee has been the victim of trade rumors and doubts about his abilities throughout the offseason. But Lee is very good at two valuable skills: rebounding and scoring inside. He may not be the most well-rounded player, but Lee is an above-average starter at the power forward position. That being said, Lee, as any player does, has improvements to make next season. Here are five things Lee needs to improve during the 2014-15 season.

Lee has always been a competent passer as far as big men go, but he did not utilize his ability to pass out of the post as much last season under Mark Jackson’s isolation-heavy offense. Under Steve Kerr, Lee should look to involve his teammates and improve the offense’s fluidity with strong inside-out passing.

Lee simply lacks the wingspan and vertical leaping ability to be a good rim protector, but that does not mean he cannot improve his defense in other ways. He has never been great with on-ball defense and getting his hands in passing lanes, but Lee is a high-IQ player who could become adept at disrupting passes and stealing the ball.

3. Rediscovering His Jump Shot

Lee’s jump shot totally abandoned him last season, and to give his teammates, especially Andrew Bogut, room to operate inside the paint, Lee needs to be able to drain shots from mid-range. Lee has been a competent mid-range shooter in past seasons, but he needs to rediscover his stroke this season to create healthy spacing for his teammates.

2. Staying Healthy

One of Lee’s biggest faults is his inability to play 80 games in a season due to injury -- a problem that becomes exacerbated on a roster with other injury risks, such as Bogut, Stephen Curry and an increasingly beat up Andre Iguodala. Now that Lee is entering his 30s, he needs to take extra care to pace himself during the season and make sure he is available for important games down the stretch in the regular season and during the playoffs.

Lee’s biggest flaw is well known and that is his defense. However, for big men, simply staying in front of the shooter with hands up is often enough to disrupt a shot. Lee will never be a great defender due to his lack of athleticism and smaller size, but he can improve drastically by just mirroring his man and challenging the shot, even if he does not get a hand on it. Moreover, this would lighten Bogut’s load on defense significantly.
