Top 10 NBA Point Guards

If there's any position in the NBA that currently has more talent and depth than any other, it's the point guard position. The NBA is seeing veterans still in their prime, guys reaching the climax of their careers, and other stars are seemingly popping up overnight. That said, these 10 guys stand out as the league's top point guards today.

10. Rajon Rondo

Although he has been plagued by the injury bug and only played in 121 games over the last three seasons, when he’s by far the best true point guard the game has to offer when healthy. Averaging 8.4 APG during his career while missing what a majority of what could be his prime speaks volumes to how great this guy could be. Unfortunately, injuries have placed Rondo at the bottom of this list.

9. Goran Dragic

If you didn’t have the opportunity to watch Goran Dragic have an amazing breakout season, you missed out on something special. Within one season, Dragic went from a relatively unknown to a one of the premier point guards the game has to offer. He’s one of the craftiest guys around the rim, and has a pretty nice shooting touch and passing ability to complement it.

8. Kyrie Irving

There’s no telling how the additions of LeBron James and Kevin Love will affect Kyrie Irving, but one thing for sure is that he’s a top 10 point guard with the opportunity to win a few championships very young in his career. He’s already proven himself as a scorer and facilitator for the Cavaliers. Now, the next step is becoming a leader with the world’s greatest player.

7. Damian Lillard

It’s not often you see a second-year player with so much confidence and ice in his veins. It takes a true assassin and leader to end a team’s playoff hopes at the buzzer as Damian Lillard did against the Rockets, but this just speaks to the greatness we’ll get to see for the next decade. I know he’s ranked a little high, but Lillard is the real deal. Buy into the hype.

6. John Wall

John Wall can finally have his name mentioned among the best NBA point guards, and although his isn’t a true superstar yet, there’s no question he is on his way. Setting career-highs with 19.3 PPG and 8.8 APG spoke volumes for his improvements as a facilitator, balanced scorer and overall leader for the Wizards.

5. Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose is back … again. I don’t want to buy into the hype of his second return, only to be let down again, but the athleticism and dominance he displayed during the Team USA Fiba World Cup tryouts showed that Rose has somehow looked better than he did during his MVP season.

I really couldn’t tell you the last time the league had a point guard with the great shooting touch of Stephen Curry. After setting career-highs with 24 PPG and 8.5 APG, Curry showed why his name deserves to be mentioned with the elite NBA guards.

3. Russell Westbrook

As arguably the most athletic point guard in NBA history, I slot Russell Westbrook as the NBA’s third-best point guard, and his control over the playoffs last season support that. Although he gets most of the blame for the Thunder’s failures, there’s no denying how great this guy really is. After outshining the MVP in the playoffs, Westbrook is making it look like the Thunder are now HIS team.

2. Tony Parker

Fresh off of adding a fourth NBA ring to his hand, Parker will be back to continue dominating the league in his usual fashion. Although he’s not the flashiest guy to watch, his leadership, ability to control every single game, and uncanny will to win is next to none. There’s no competition here for the league’s second-best point guard.

I don’t think there’s any question here as to who the best point guard in the NBA is. Chris Paul has had a hold of the reins since his days in New Orleans, and averaging 19.1 PPG and 10.7 APG as the unshakable leader of a team contending for a championship supports his case as the top floor general in the NBA.
