The Wizards made strides to being one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference last season. Their exciting backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal has become one of the best tandems the NBA has to offer. The addition of veteran Paul Pierce gives them the championship pedigree they desperately needed. Will they be able to take another step towards the elite this season? Here are five games that will test them on that journey.

The Wizards are hoping to take another step forward this season, and an early matchup with the defending Eastern Conference champions is a perfect way to test themselves. Yes, the Heat lost LeBron James, but they will still be a quality team and one that Washington may have to face in the playoffs.

Washington is trying to become a contending team this season. In order to be the best, you've got to beat the best, and LeBron James is the best. He has owned the Eastern Conference for quite a while now, and the Wizards are hoping to dethrone the King, not just on Nov. 21, but when it really counts in May as well.

The Wizards handled the feisty Bulls with ease last playoffs, but the Bulls now have Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol in their lineup. These two teams will both be hosting first-round series come May, but this December matchup will provide a nice rematch and possible preview for fans.

The Knicks were a train wreck last season and are expected to be much improved this year. The Wizards want to prove that they are still one of the top young teams in the East by beating the veteran-loaded Knicks on a national stage on Christmas Day.

This is the last game of the regular season when the Wizards are facing LeBron and the Cavs again. I hope they both have something to play for so their lineups remain star-studded. If that is the case, this will be a perfect appetizer for the intense playoff basketball entree that will shortly follow.
