While the summer has been dominated by big names such as LeBron James, Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony, many seem to have forgotten about Kobe Bryant. Sure, he is turning 36 years of age this upcoming week, and yes, he is coming off of a knee injury. Bryant has not played competitive basketball in little over year, after previously tearing his Achilles’ tendon.
Bryant views everything as motivation, and these last two injuries coupled with the pundits counting him out will only strengthen his drive to reach the familiar top that he has been perched at for so long. Bryant does, however, know that his time is slowly dwindling down as he enters his 19th NBA season.
While times have certainly changed, and the Los Angeles Lakers are by no means favorites to win a championship; Laker faithful will be tuned into every game watching Bryant embark on another journey to a rather big milestone. Bryant is a mere 593 points from tying his idol, Michael Jordan, for third in all-time points scored. Jordan is locked into the record books behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone with 32,292 points scored, while Bryant is climbing the books currently at 31,700.
Every NBA fan knows how big of a deal this is, and how great of a feat it will be when it happens. Bryant and Jordan will forever be linked together based off the similar style of play, the coach and the will to win. Most of the comparisons come because of Bryant, who molded his game tenfold after Jordan, but everyone wants to be like Mike.
Depending on how Bryant comes back this upcoming season, it will only be a matter of time before he scores 593 points to surpass Jordan. In a perfect world, the 593rd point would come in the Windy City on Christmas. One can only speculate when it comes, but everyone is sure that it will come nonetheless.
While Bryant is looking to catch Jordan in championships won, surpassing his Airness in total points will be a great consolation prize as a championship this season does not look very feasible. However, as many Lakers fans will tell you, you can never count out Vino and his drive to be the greatest.
As the games pass this upcoming season, watch how much attention will begin to arise as Bryant nears closer and closer to the point total of Jordan.
