The chance to win a championship is too good to pass up, even if it means allowing millions of dollars to walk out the door. Free agent small forward Shawn Marion told every team that he met with over the past several weeks that he wants to play for a contender above everything else, which is why it is no surprise that he has agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers have already put together a championship-caliber team with the addition of LeBron James via free agency and Kevin Love via a reported trade that should take place at the end of the month. Not to mention, Kyrie Irving has the potential to be one of the best point guards in the league for years to come. Cleveland is the complete package, which includes savvy veterans. For that reason, Marion is very wise to sign with them.
Many may see this deal as lucky for Marion. The 36-year-old has a great opportunity to go out on top as an NBA champion. However, what is easily overlooked is that the Cavaliers are also incredibly fortunate to land the veteran.
Marion will have an important role in which his outstanding defensive skills and versatility will be utilized to the maximum every game. His ability to shut down some of the best offensive threats in the league will be huge down the stretch and in the playoffs. On top of that, when he is not playing great defense, he will be putting up points on a consistent basis to take some pressure off the star players.
The Cavaliers are already a matchup nightmare for opponents, but adding Marion to the mix makes them that much more dangerous.
