The Washington Wizards were one of the fortunate few franchises that didn’t sustain drastic change throughout their roster this offseason, and this has propelled them to the top of the East. Several key games against other title contending teams will help determine just how far the Wizards have come from last season’s second round playoff exit. Here are five important early games to keep your eye on for the Washington Wizards.

With the future of the franchise now in Phil Jackson's hands, expect the New York Knicks, led by Carmelo Anthony, to come out furiously this season as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2013-14 campaign. The Wizards will have to learn how to defend one of the deadliest offensive players in the league.

This will be the Washington Wizards' first tough matchup against a quality opponent out of the Western Conference. The Dallas Mavericks retooled this offseason by returning Tyson Chandler, re-signing Dirk Nowitski, and most importantly, bringing Chandler Parsons, one of the league's most improved small forwards, on board. The Wizards will have their hands full with this matchup.

Although the Miami Heat franchise lost LeBron James this offseason, they were still able to rebound by resigning Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and a few other key role players. This will be the perfect test to start the season for the Wizards, since they will be playing against the reigning Eastern Conference champs.

The Chicago Bulls are being deemed one of the only teams other than the Cleveland Cavaliers to have a real chance at representing the conference in the NBA Finals this season. These two teams are division rivals, and all four games between these franchises will be total slugfests. John Wall vs. Derrick Rose might be the most exciting matchup of all.

What is the best way to establish your dominance in the Eastern Conference? By beating one the new best teams in the league. The Cleveland Cavaliers are now a force to be reckoned with, especially with the additions of Kevin Love and LeBron James. If the Wizards are looking for a game to establish their place in the hierarchy of the East, this is the game the franchise needs to circle on the calendar.
