To identify who the Denver Nuggets' best players are, I scored each player (excluding rookies), from 1-10, across 12 categories (paint scoring, driving ability, mid-range shooting, three-point shooting, free-throw shooting, passing, ball security, defense, rebounding shot blocking, athleticism and leadership) to determine an aggregated score which relates to each player’s overall value to the team. Here are the results.

12. JaVale McGee (4.67)

The only categories that JaVale McGee scored above a five were in shot blocking and athleticism. He is a complete Wild Card on this team for the upcoming year. He certainly has value for his ability to run the court and his shot blocking ability, but he is a below average rebounder and defender for someone his size, and adds no value in the half court set offensively.

11. Darrell Arthur (5.33)

Darrell Arthur scored pretty average across the board, only really excelling in free throw shooting and for his stout defense. Both were basically offset by his horrific short range game (39 percent from two point range). Arthur has value as a mid to long-range shooter and is one of the Nuggets' best defensive big men.

10. Quincy Miller (5.50)

Quincy Miller really only provides value as an athletic small-forward, who shows a consistent ability to slash to the basket, and make an occasional spot-up three pointer. He was awful between three feet and the three-point arc, shooting around 27 percent. He has plenty of talent, but needs to be less of a defensive liability and to improve his mid-range game drastically.

9. J.J. Hickson (5.92)

J.J. Hickson is one of the best rebounders in the league, and excelled in this area, but is hurt by his lack of any mid-range game, and his relatively surprising defensive weaknesses. He is outstanding in the paint, given his ability to convert offensive rebounds into points.

8. Timofey Mozgov (6.08)

Timofey Mozgov had a breakout season last year, showing flashes of his ability to become a dominant big man in the NBA. He excels on the defensive end, and is an above average rebounder and shot blocker. He is also has a quality short and mid-range game. He struggles a bit athletically with ball control, and is not a great passer.

7. Nate Robinson (6.17)

Nate Robinson has superior athleticism, and is a very good shooter from long distance. He is also very good at controlling the ball, turning the ball over at a very low ratio. He struggles on the defensive side of the ball due to his size, and is also irrelevant as a rebounder and shot blocker as a result.

6. Wilson Chandler (6.25)

Wilson Chandler is pretty consistently above average across the board. His only below average category was leadership, and that results from his sometimes lackluster attitude and apparent disinterest. It still feels like Chandler has another level he could take it to, but appears to be content with mediocrity. He has excellent ball control, turning the ball over at a team low 8.9 percent per 100 possessions.

5. Randy Foye (6.33)

Randy Foye was surprisingly strong across the board, with the exception of rebounding, where he rated below even Ty Lawson for percentage of rebounds grabbed when on the floor. Lawson was rated at 5.2 percent and Foye was rated at 5.0 percent. He was strong in most every other category, however, and I think his importance to this team has been significantly overlooked.

4. Arron Afflalo (6.42)

4. Arron Afflalo (6.42)

Arron Afflalo scored extremely well in most every offensive category, but was hurt by his poor defensive numbers from last season. He ranked near the bottom of his team in defensive rating, defensive win shares and steal percentage. He will be one of the Nuggets' best scorers, however, is solid with his ball control and is a very good passer.

3. Danilo Gallinari (6.50)

Danilo Gallinari is the first player to rank above average in every single category. He is one of the Nuggets' best scorers, inside out. He is a solid passer and controls the ball well with very few turnovers. He is also a very underrated defender, and will be counted on heavily this year to provide some tough perimeter defense on team’s best players. His return from injury will be huge.

2. Ty Lawson (6.58)

Ty Lawson is clearly one of the Nuggets' best players, and is so explosive in certain categories that it far outweighs his weaknesses. He is one of the most athletic players on the team, drives to the basket better than most players in the league, and is a great passer. He turns the ball over way too much, however, and struggles defensively due to his small frame.

1. Kenneth Faried (6.75)

Kenneth Faried is a manimal amongst boys, and really the only categories he was dinged on were his mid-range shooting, long-range shooting, and passing ability. He is the Nuggets' best defensive player, is continuing to improve his leadership skills, is a monster on the boards, and is an above average shot blocker. Look for him to improve on his offensive efficiency this season, and truly establish himself as a star.
