After winning a NCAA championship in Arizona, Terry was one of the hottest names entering the 1999 NBA draft. He was selected 10th overall by the Atlanta Hawks. After enduring an average rookie season, Terry broke out in 2000, becoming the Hawks' best player for a four-year stretch before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

Terry wasn’t always a sixth man, but he seemed to find his groove coming off the Mavericks bench. In 2009, he won the NBA Sixth Man Award following a season in which he averaged 19.6 PPG, 3.4 APG, 2.4 RPG, 1.3 STLPG in 33.7 MPG.

In Terry’s first playoff series as a Maverick, he found his team in a quick 2-0 deficit in the series despite having home court advantage. However, with Terry’s help, the Mavericks somehow pushed the series to a Game 7, in which Terry would score a game-high 31 points and nearly single-handedly willed the Mavericks to victory.
