The Detroit Pistons have had 35 head coaches in their history. Only 10 of the 35 have winning records with Detroit, so there have been a lot of bad hires in the past. Fortunately, there have also been some great hires that went on to lead the franchise to the ultimate prize. Here are the top five coaches in the history of the Detroit Pistons.

The Doug Collins era in Detroit isn't typically seen as a successful one, but his .578 winning percentage is good for fifth best in team history. He guided the Pistons to the playoffs two years in a row but was bounced in the first round each time. Collins' time in Detroit would have likely been much longer with a little more playoff success.

Rick Carlisle only coached two years in Detroit which in retrospect was probably a little unfair. His firing had much more to do with issues with ownership than the results on the court. He won 50 games in each of the two seasons and reached the conference finals in year two. Carlisle also won the NBA Coach of the Year in his first year with Detroit. Fortunately, he has been given the chance to flourish in Dallas.

Flip Saunders has the highest win percentage in Detroit history with a staggering .715 clip. He made the Eastern Conference Finals all three years in Detroit. Unfortunately, he lost all three of those series which tarnished his run with the Pistons. His regular season resume is as good as anyone else on this list, but not getting that team to the finals knocks him down to No. 3.

Timing was everything with Larry Brown and the Detroit Pistons. He was the perfect fit for that roster and the results speak for themselves. Brown's coaching performance during the 2004 playoffs has to be among the best of all time. The era ended poorly in typical Larry Brown fashion, which is unfortunate because what he accomplished in Detroit was truly special.

Chuck Daly is one of the best coaches in NBA history. He is the Pistons' all-time leader in wins with 467 and was the head coach of the original Dream Team. Daly won back-to-back titles with the Bad Boy Pistons. His greatest accomplishment was probably the ability to corral all of the different personalities on those Pistons teams.
