Phoenix Suns: Top 5 Point Guards In Team History

One could argue that the Phoenix Suns have employed some of the greatest point guards to ever play the game, because they've seen a wealth of talent at this position over the years. The Suns currently have six players in the Hall of Fame, and eventually at least two former Suns point guards will join them. Surely they've made it onto this top five list, so let's take a look and see who they are.

As an original New Jersey Nets player, Stephon Marbury was traded to the Suns in 2001 for Jason Kidd and a few others. With players like Shawn Marion and Rookie of the Year Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix looked ready to do big things. Unfortunately, they only made it to the playoffs once during Marbury's short reign, and he was traded to the Knicks in 2003. In his three seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Marbury averaged 21.3 PPG and 8.1 APG.

As a combo-guard, Paul Westphal had a very successful NBA career that seems to be ignored by most casual NBA fans. Westphal was a scorer, but he displayed his wonderful play-making skills in his first two seasons for the Phoenix Suns when he started at the PG position. From 1975-1980, he led the Suns in scoring each year with 20.6 PPG, but he also averaged 5.2 APG. The combo-guard position is popular in the NBA today, and Westphal was a pioneer.

In 1987, Kevin Johnson was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers. With Mark Price in front of him at the PG position, the Cavs traded Johnson to the Phoenix Suns and he wasted no time winning the job as the starting PG. "KJ" dominated the NBA with his ability to score and pass, and he was a 20-and-10 guy in his prime years. With Charles Barkley by his side, the tandem took the Suns to the NBA Finals in 1993, where they lost to Jordan's Bulls.

Before he was traded to the New Jersey Nets for Stephon Marbury in 2001, Jason Kidd was absolutely dynamite for the Phoenix Suns. Kidd even surpassed Kevin Johnson as the franchise leader in APG with 9.7 APG. In his five stellar seasons with Phoenix, Kidd never failed to reach the playoffs and he became known as a triple-double-threat after he led the league in this category with seven in the 1998-99 season. He's arguably the Sun's best PG ever.

Things didn't work out that well in Dallas for Steve Nash, but his move to Phoenix was a blessing in disguise. Nash orchestrated one of the most exciting offenses in NBA history in his days with the Suns. Phoenix played an up-tempo game under head coach Mike D'Antoni, so in order to beat the Suns, teams had to put up a lot of points every night. Nash had many career highlights, but his greatest achievement was winning the NBA MVP Award — twice.
