Since the team's inception in 1988, the Miami Heat have primarily been known for their talented wing players and dominant big men. Names like Alonzo Mourning, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Dan Majerle and Jamal Mashburn first come to mind.

The team has also had its fair share of skilled point guards who have been instrumental in their 26-year history. Here are the top five point guards in Miami Heat team history.

5. Bimbo Coles (1990-1996, 2003-2004)

Although his numbers will not jump out at you, there is a reason Coles was a key cog in the early Miami Heat teams. He knew how to control the pace of the game, as well as find his teammates for open looks. Coles is currently ranked fourth all-time in Heat history in overall assists (1,961), finishing behind Wade, James and Tim Hardaway. That is pretty respectable company.

4. Jason Williams (2005-2008)

Known better by the nickname "White Chocolate", the Heat got some great work out of Williams during the four seasons he was with the team. In addition to the expected flash he liked to demonstrate so often, Williams was also a capable shooter from both the field and three-point range. He was the starting point guard on the 2006 title team and was also a fan favorite in Miami during his stint there.

3. Mario Chalmers (2008-present)

While many will rightfully lament Chalmers for his poor performance in the 2014 Finals, those same people also forget how huge he was in winning both championships for the Heat during his time here, especially the 2013 crown. He is a lethal outside shooter and a respectable defender, and it will be very interesting to see him attempt to pick up more of the offensive slack now that LeBron James is no longer on the team.

2. Sherman Douglas (1989-1991)

Granted, he was only there for two years, but Douglas put in work during his two seasons with the Heat. In his rookie season (1989-90) he averaged 16.8 PPG, 9.0 APG, and 2.1 SPG on a fantastic 49 percent shooting clip from the field. In his sophomore season he upped his scoring to 19.0 PPG and shot over 50 percent from the field. He was absolutely fantastic during his first couple years in the league and went on to have a very solid NBA career.

Hardaway was the definition of a tough-nosed point guard. At 6-foot and 195 pounds, he was built like a tank for the position and played on some great Heat teams with his partner in crime Alonzo Mourning. A five-time All-Star, Hardaway also made the All-NBA Second Team three times, as well as the All-NBA First Team once. Ask any diehard Heat fan, and they will tell you Hardaway was the best point guard they ever had.
