Surviving the trade rumors, helping Team USA to a gold medal at the FIBA World Cup and being the most talented remaining player from the 2011 NBA draft class who is still on his rookie deal has Golden State WarriorsKlay Thompson eager to see what lays ahead for him.

The hope is that Thompson can land a max contract extension with the Warriors prior to the start of the season. Generally, players who are on rookie deals who do not sign an extension prior to the end of October are destined to reach free agency, which is something Thompson does not want to do. Clearly, getting paid the most money possible is the name of the game, but he would prefer that to happen with Golden State. Not to mention, it is in the best interest of the Warriors to sign him now so that they can avoid having to match large contract offers next summer.

To light a fire underneath Warriors management, Thompson’s agent Billy Duffy has decided to praise his client in the best way possible.

“I don’t want Kobe Bryant to go crazy, but there’s some uncertainty as to who he is right now (because of injuries that limited him to six games last season),” Duffy told USA TODAY Sports. “But I think Klay Thompson right now is the top two-way, two-guard in basketball. I think when you look at his body of work, when you look at what he accomplished guarding point guards on a regular basis (last season), I think it’s pretty clear.”

Being the best two-way guard in basketball means that Thompson not only flourishes on offense but he also dominates on defense. I am not saying that he is a bad defender, which he certainly is not. With that said, calling him the best or suggesting he is an elite defender might be getting a little carried away.

Obviously, Duffy is simply trying to bolster his client so that the team understands what Thompson feels he deserves in the form of a big-time contract extension. At this point, the Warriors would be foolish not to give it to him considering he is a staple of the offense. More importantly, he is a huge part of the team’s plans if they want to reach the NBA Finals anytime soon.
