The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Keith Appling to their training camp roster, as they look to fill out the last couple of spots before the season starts. Appling spent four years playing college under Tom Izzo, and improved greatly as a leader and a player. He might struggle to stick with an NBA team, but could develop into a productive role player. His strengths give him a chance to make the Lakers’ roster, even if it is a long shot.

The best attribute that Appling has to offer the Lakers is his ability to guard opposing point guards. He has underrated athleticism and long arms for a guard, which will help him compete with the more explosive players in the league. He is quick and active, which the Lakers are greatly lacking on the perimeter, especially at the point guard spot. The Lakers don’t have any lockdown defenders, and he could give them a “pest” in the back court.

Offensively, Appling has a lot of work to do if he wants to be able to contribute. He needs to improve his shooting, especially his consistency. He is good at getting to the basket and understanding his role in a team-oriented offense, which may benefit him since he won’t be asked to do much. He can fill in and run the plays, although he is unlikely to stand out.

Appling may struggle to make the team, but he offers a good skill set that should keep the organization intrigued. They need to add quickness to their backcourt, and Appling would immediately improve their perimeter defense. He wouldn’t be asked to do much on offense, as they have plenty of players who can score and create. The Lakers were smart to bring him in and give him a chance to make the final roster.
