In the 2014 NBA free agency period, the Los Angeles Clippers addressed their biggest weakness in a big way by signing center Spencer Hawes. Hawes provides the Clippers with a capable backup big man, something the team has been missing for some time. With the move, Los Angeles has cemented themselves as one of the few teams that could legitimately challenge the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference.

With the signing of Hawes, the Clippers have a formidable frontcourt capable of matching up with San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, Tiago Splitter and Boris Diaw. The Clippers’ frontcourt is highlighted by Blake Griffin, who has improved his offensive game tremendously since entering the league. His jump shot has become something he can rely upon, and his passing ability is probably the most underrated part of his game. Next to him, DeAndre Jordan is one of the best rebounders in the NBA, and his athletic ability and defensive presence next to Griffin make the two a strong case for the best frontcourt duo in the league.

With Hawes added the equation, the Clippers have a legitimate three-point threat and passing big man who can create mismatches on the offensive end. This area had been lacking for the Clippers, as Ryan Hollins and Glen Davis simply did not cut it in recent seasons.

Furthermore, the Clippers have one of the best head coaches in the NBA, something very few teams can boast. With Doc Rivers at the helm, Los Angeles possesses a coach capable of holding his ground against Gregg Popovich. Now with a deep frontcourt at his disposal, Rivers and company have their eyes set on a Western Conference title, and the Spurs should not take those chances lightly.
