NBA Championship Prediction: Dallas Mavericks

Championship Dirk Dallas

This is a particularly hard thing to say, considering I have many friends in the fan base, but I think that the Dallas Mavericks will win the championship this year.

Dallas is somewhat of a dark horse this season, because people don’t really see them as a contender. And they want to keep it that way.

They want to fly under the radar. It might seem as though Mark Cuban’s style is flashy, but that really isn’t the case. I thought similarly for the past few years, but my opinion has changed. He is only flashy when it comes to paying players. That is, he tries to make deals as fair as they can be to players on his team.

Obviously he is a businessman, and with that, comes a bit of savviness and business acumen. But he is absolutely fair, which is why when a lot of people go to Dallas, they rarely want to leave.

There is a synergy in Dallas. There is an unselfishness that you rarely see in teams that aren’t in Texas. Dirk Nowitzki is a silent assassin that cuts through the teeth of defenses night in and night out without a huge announcement of his presence. There is no marketing with him; he just wants to play basketball.

Monta Ellis has improved as a jumpshooter and defender since getting to Dallas. He is not just known as the shifty scorer he once was with the Golden State Warriors. Now, he is looking to create plays for others off the dribble.

What was that? They lost Vince Carter? That is fine, because they picked up an all-around borderline all-star in Chandler Parsons. Parsons can do it all on the court. There is nothing that inhibits him. They also picked up Tyson Chandler, who was on the 2011 team that won the championship against, well, LeBron James and the Miami Heat.

I too questioned their point guard play, until seeing that they have Jameer Nelson, a player who can stretch defenses and make plays through pick and rolls, which I imagine will be utilized with Chandler and Nowitzki. This provides a similarity with the 2011 season.

It will be tough for them to get out of the West, but they have added pieces that I firmly believe can help them do so. Last year, they took the San Antonio Spurs to seven games in the first round before losing in Game 7. While San Antonio has roughly stayed the same, Dallas has gotten much better, so look out for them this season.
