The Portland Trail Blazers are coming off a very successful 2013-14 season. Behind their deadly combination of All-Stars Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge, the team was able to accumulate 54 wins and advanced past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 1999-00. All five starters are returning and the future looks bright for this young squad, which expects to make the playoffs once again in the tough Western Conference.

Mo Williams, last year’s sixth man, didn’t pick up his 2014-15 player option and signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves this past offseason. The Blazers’ sixth man role is wide open heading into the season. Rip City hopes second-year guard C.J. McCollum is ready for the added responsibility, but with no clear-cut choice, head coach Terry Stotts will likely go with a more balanced rotation when distributing minutes to his bench to start the year.

With another year under Terry Stotts, the team’s overall defense should be better. Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum are still extremely versatile defenders who can effectively shut down scorers when needed. However, the team was ranked 28th in points in the paint allowed last year, and Portland still lacks a legitimate rim protector. The Blazers also struggled with pick-and-roll defense throughout last season, which must be corrected.

Portland's bench was the biggest weakness last season, as it ranked dead last statistically in terms of bench efficiency. The team added a couple of veteran pieces to the bench this offseason such as Steve Blake and Chris Kaman. The bench should make strides this year with their arrivals and the expected progression from young players, including C.J. McCollum, Thomas Robinson and Will Barton.

The Oakland-born point guard is coming off an incredible third season in which he became an All-Star and made the All-NBA Third Team. He's proven to be one of the most difficult guards to lock up in the NBA. The biggest improvement Lillard can make this year is on the defensive end, where he was a consistent liability last year. His on-ball and pick-and-roll defense are the specific areas where he can show the most progress this year.

The Western Conference will once again be stacked with at least nine solid teams vying for eight playoff spots. It’s difficult to expect Portland being any higher than fourth in the conference, which they accomplished last year. With the leadership of LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard, they are definitely capable of winning a first-round series again, but going any further than the second round will be a difficult task that seems unlikely.
