Mark Jackson should be coaching in the NBA right now, and the ideal team for him is the Orlando Magic.
I say this because I am a fan of Jackson, as he has produced results in turning around a Golden State Warrior franchise that was once a league laughingstock, and is now a perennial contender. I also say this because I am not a fan of current Magic head coach Jacque Vaughn.
Oh sure, people will tell me that Vaughn came from the Gregg Popovich coaching tree, and is primed to be a good coach. But the truth of the matter is this: He is not a good head coach. Just because he came from the Popovich line of assistant coaches doesn’t mean he is automatically going to be a head coach.
Some coaches are meant to be head coaches, and others are meant to be assistants. Jackson is the former, and Vaughn is the latter.
With the pieces Magic GM Rob Hennigan has assembled for the 2014-15 season, the Magic should be good enough to make a run for the playoffs. But with Vaughn at the helm, I am not so sure this will happen. Vaughn can’t get a rotation down, and sometimes it seems like he has no idea what he is doing.
Jackson knows how to lead a team. We have seen it in action, and if he was the head coach of the Magic, there would be no doubt in my mind that they would be playoff contenders. So consider this piece an open letter to Jackson to please come to Orlando, because the current coach of the Magic is just not making the grade.
