The Dallas Mavericks almost knocked the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs out of the playoffs in the first round and the Mavs have actually improved in the offseason. They picked up C Tyson Chandler and G Raymond Felton while losing Jose Calderon. Dallas was also able to pick up Jameer Nelson, but were these moves enough to make an impact for the team?
To recap, the Mavs lost one starting point guard and picked up two. Frankly, Nelson is the only consistent option that head coach Rick Carlisle has and Felton has shown flashes of competency while a bit inconsistent. Harris allows the Mavs to go three deep at an obviously important position, but his experience could make him a valuable asset in the trade market.
Harris was once a top point guard in the league, but those days are over. He can be of great value to other teams, especially teams that rely heavily on depth at PG. While the Mavs need depth at the point, Monta Ellis can pick up any slack the team would lose and then the team could add another piece at wing or even a future draft pick to help this team to keep building.
While the Mavs may need depth at PG as well, the team must know that this isn’t a championship year. Either Dallas can hold on to a decent player to keep the team mediocre or find future value for the prospect of becoming great. Mark Cuban is a forward-thinking businessman, and he has to know that his team doesn’t gain significant value with Harris on the roster. Let him go and find something that actually makes the team better; keep him and both Harris and the Mavericks will continue to waste time.
