According to Phil Jackson, Carmelo Anthony will be receiving a lot of double-teams in the post. This is probably true, given that he is the only All-Star on the New York Knicks roster. His biggest challenge will be his passing this season.
We know that Anthony can score in bunches. We have seen what he can do. But this season, Jackson is challenging Anthony to try and create for his teammates similar to the way that Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have been able to do. Yes, I know that Jordan and Kobe have been known as primarily scorers who led the league in scoring during their time with Jackson, but I am not saying that Anthony doesn’t need to score. They need him to. In fact, if he doesn’t score at least within the 25-26 points per game range, then I think that the Knicks are in big trouble.
But what they need him to do is add a dimension to his game that we haven’t seen from him. The Knicks are going to thrive with ball movement. This includes J.R. Smith, who has been known as a player who takes whatever shot has been given to him, good or bad.
If Anthony can learn how to do this, then New York can be successful in the triangle, a surge of MVP talks for Anthony and an increase in winning. Last year Kevin Durant won the MVP, but what set him apart from everyone else was not just his scoring. He averaged a career-high in assists per game, creating for teammates while Russell Westbrook was gone due to injury.
This may be the “year of Melo.”
