Minnesota Timberwolves Should Strongly Consider Trading Corey Brewer

The Minnesota Timberwolves were part of one of the bigger deals in recent years when they traded Kevin Love for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and other assets. They have a young, athletic team, but have to play in the very tough Western Conference. As a result, they will struggle to compete for a playoff spot, even though they have some very talented players. They should look to trade a wing player to create more playing time for their youth, and Corey Brewer would likely attract the most teams.

Brewer is an athletic small forward capable of contributing key minutes on a contending team. He is not a great outside shooter, but is a good slasher who can finish at the rim. More importantly, he is a very good defender, utilizing his length to shut down perimeter scorers. There are plenty of teams who will be looking to upgrade their defense as the season moves along, and Brewer represents a solid option with a good contract.

If the Timberwolves are able to trade Brewer, then it will help free up the log jam at the forward position. Wiggins will need plenty of playing time to develop, but may struggle to find consistent playing time with so many quality players already playing his position. The team should also be able to acquire an important future asset for Brewer, something they can use to improve the team going forward.

The Timberwolves have a solid roster, but the Western Conference is so deep this year that they might be better off giving more minutes to their younger players so that they can develop. By trading away good players like Brewer, who can instantly contribute for a contender, they can acquire extra draft picks to help build the team around their future stars. They have a potential superstar in Wiggins — as well as other high lottery picks — and need to make sure they are given the chance to prove themselves.
