San Antonio Spurs Should Strongly Consider Trading Boris Diaw

The San Antonio Spurs are coming off of a title winning season, and have kept the majority of their championship roster together for another run. This team is primed to make it back to the NBA Finals for a third year in a row. The core of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker will be the mainstays of this franchise until one of the three decides to retire, but how the Spurs have built their sustained success is by surrounding their core three with complementary players who can play both sides of the ball efficiently. Boris Diaw is a perfect example of a complementary player who helped elevate the Spurs to a title last season, and is now the perfect time to consider trading him to another team.

Diaw didn’t necessarily fill the stat sheet with eye-popping numbers last season, but what makes him so valuable is his contributions on both sides of the ball, whether it’s a nifty outlet pass to a teammate, or impressive defense on the block guarding an opposing forward. His contributions were vital to the Spurs winning the title last season, which also means his stock has never been higher as a tradable asset.

The Spurs are already loaded in the frontcourt with Tim Duncan, Jeff Ayres, Aron Baynes and Tiago Splitter. This doesn’t include Kawhi Leonard and Austin Daye, both of whom could play minutes at power forward sparingly as well. Diaw could demand some quality talent in return if traded, or even cap space for a loaded 2016 free agency bid. Due to his age, it’s hard to imagine Diaw duplicating his averages from last season, especially if he sees reduced minutes. Now is the time for the Spurs to heavily consider trading Boris, because his perceived stock will never be higher.
