Denver Nuggets Should Strongly Consider Trading JaVale McGee

The Denver Nuggets have been known as a rare commodity in the NBA over the past few seasons. One of the biggest narratives regarding this team recently, particularly during their 50+ wins two seasons ago, is the fact that this is a team without a star. They have a plethora of above-average players, but there’s no one that you can peg as the star on their roster.

Despite that fact, though, this is a team that has shown they can succeed when all of their pieces are healthy. Throw in the addition of Arron Afflalo this offseason, and this team could be set to make some noise in the Western Conference. That also could mean that the Nuggets may look to make a deal to cement their status as a playoff team in the conference.

If a trade is something that Denver looks to work with this season, they should consider JaVale McGee at the top of their list in terms of assets they’d be willing to move.

McGee played in only five games for Denver last season due to a leg injury that ended the year for the big center. He’s healthy now at the start of the 2014-15 regular season, but he’s working his way back to full-strength and to getting back in the flow of the game. However, he’s also going to be competing for time behind Timofey Mozgov with rookie Jusuf Nurkic.

There’s no doubt that McGee is supremely athletic and talented, though he’s also prone to make a bone-headed play on occasion. However, what he’s able to do as a positive on the basketball court could make him a valuable asset that other teams around the league would desire, especially when he shows that he’s ready to perform at the level he was prior to his injury.

The only question mark about McGee, beyond the recent injury, is the fact that he does have a lofty deal attached to him that might be somewhat difficult to move. If the Nuggets find a suitor that’d be willing to send them some help at the power forward position or draft picks to help bolster their future, that’s something Denver would almost certainly have to do.
