There is an unwritten moral code behind being a true sports fan. It is almost like being married. When you choose your specific team, you have given a vow to stand by the team’s side through good times and bad, for richer or poorer. Every fan will face hardships with their particular team. For Dallas Maverick fans, the years have been good, but here are the five toughest things about rooting for the Mavs.

For more than a decade, Dallas has been a regular season wrecking ball. Between 2000 and 2011, the franchise ripped off 11-consecutive 50-plus win seasons. That is an impressive task in a tough Western Conference. However, the Mavs playoff success has been the opposite. During that 11-season stretch, Dallas was knocked out of the first round and second round four times. They do have two finals appearances and one ring, but that's still rough.

The state of Texas is big on pride, especially between opposing cities and their sports teams. For Dallas, it has been a rough decade as their success is buried behind the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs have six Finals appearances and five championships in a 16 season span compared to the Mavericks’ two Finals and one title. In a state where everything is bigger, it’s not fun to be inferior.

As a diehard Mavericks fan, you must often ask yourself the question: “What might have been if Steve Nash re-signed?” The star point guard became a free agent in 2004 and signed with the Phoenix Suns after Mark Cuban refused Nash more money. Cuban went in a different direction, which has seen success, but the thought of Dirk Nowitzki and Nash must keep the Dallas fanbase up at night.

Speaking of Cuban, he doesn’t make it easy being a Mavs fan. The brash and arrogant owner can often be seen court-side badgering officials. Sure, Cuban can be entertaining, but it’s obvious that his mouth does most of the running, not his legs. There is something about Dallas that attracts crazy owners, and that sure doesn’t make being a fan easy.

This is by far the most difficult and toughest event that plagues Mavs fans. The 2006 NBA Finals was all but wrapped up. Cuban, Nowitzki and Dallas were going to bring home the first title for the franchise. With a two games to none lead, the Mavericks were already crowned and it all came tumbling down. The Miami Heat won four straight games to take the title in six. Not even the 2011 title can ease that pain.
