Things are not going well for the Los Angeles Lakers so far this season. It’s not like anyone expected things to go smoothly for the rebuilding franchise, but you can certainly argue that the team is off to a worse-than-expected start. The Lakers’ 0-5 record has spawned Kobe Bryant trade rumors, which are ridiculous. Unless something drastically changes, Kobe isn’t going anywhere, regardless of the team’s record.
But one interesting, halfway legitimate rumor has emerged. It involves none other than Boston Celtics PG, and free agent-to-be, Rajon Rondo.
Many people have had Rondo gone from Boston for years. It hasn’t been a question of if he’ll be moved, it’s been a question of when. Given that this is the final year of his deal and that the team essentially has his replacement in Marcus Smart, the writing is on the wall for a deadline deal.
Rondo will likely become a rental player for a contender down the stretch this season. But what about next season?
According to a new report from Sports Illustrated, the long-time Celtic could become the Lakers’ top free agent target:
“There is one player who makes sense in LA next season: Rajon Rondo. Several rival executives believe the Lakers will make a strong run at Rondo next summer, and it’s easy to see why. Rondo is young (28), plays a critical position and shares the same win-at-all-bleeping-cost attitude as Bryant. The Celtics are rebuilding and have a young playmaker in Marcus Smart, which may limit their desire to hand Rondo max money.”
This rumor is no doubt music to Kobe’s ears. Rondo is a pass-first PG and he does share an attitude with the Black Mamba. It’s easy to see him fitting in with the Lakers. But given that he will be free to sign anywhere, the Lakers will likely have to offer him a ton of money. L.A. isn’t the free agency destination it used to be.
For now, file this in the maybe pile. It’s not a crazy rumor. The bigger issue is really what else the Lakers will do to bolster their roster to make guys like Rondo think they can actually win a ring in Tinseltown.
