Philadelphia 76ers Should Worry About Historic Pace

Just over a week into the 2014-15 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers still find themselves without a victory.

After losing to the Chicago Bulls Friday night, the 76ers stand at 0-6 on the season. In most of these first six games, the young and inexperienced Sixers have found a way to stay competitive, until eventually the talent differential between them and their opponents is just too much to overcome.

Coming into the year, the 76ers weren’t expected to win many games; in fact the consensus agreement among many experts was about 13 total wins. However, despite these low expectations, the team’s 0-6 start should be cause for some concern. Only once in the franchise’s illustrious history, has a team started 0-6, and that was all the way back in 1972-73. That Fred Carter-led team went on to finish 9-73, the worst record in NBA history (outside of a lockout shortened season).

General manager Sam Hinkie and the rest of the 76ers front office may want this team to be as bad as they possibly can, but the possibility of finishing with the worst record of all-time is nothing they should embrace. This drastic rebuilding plan of Hinkie’s has been embraced in Philadelphia, but it’s embarrassing to think that during the Hinkie regime, a Sixers team tied an NBA record for the longest losing streak in history — another record signifying futility is nothing this once proud franchise should want to possess.

Going forward, the 76ers have nothing to look forward to. Their upcoming schedule, which includes a November trip around Texas, bares no easy matchups. The Sixers may be hoping for the top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, but they should not want to own that pick by any means necessary.
