The Chicago Bulls‘ offense has been on cruise control all season long, so it’s hard to believe it could be steadied even further. But Derrick Rose was able to do just that when he returned to the lineup on Monday against the Detroit Pistons.
Rose looked significantly healthier than he did against the Milwaukee Bucks. He frequently attacked the basket with ease as opposed to settling for jumpers as he did in Milwaukee. By doing so, he was often double-teamed and the defense collapsed on him in an attempt to slow him down, leaving teammates with open shots.
A player like Rose demands attention at all times and it certainly makes things easier for his teammates. Rose had seven assists and could have easily had a double-double in the game if more shots had fallen or he had played more than 32 minutes.
Rose was aggressive, explosive and ran the offense with precision and ease, providing a calming effect for the offense. We all know Rose can score at will, which particularly helps in the fourth quarter, but his ability to be a facilitator is what helps the team the most. He gets everyone involved and changes the complexion of the game.
The Bulls’ greatest struggle last season was getting a basket when they needed one while trying to close out games. When Rose is on the floor they no longer have to worry about where that shot is going to come from. After the game, Rose’s teammates raved about the difference it makes when he is on the floor; he gives everyone a sense of security and relieves the pressure they feel to score when he isn’t there. They are a great team with Rose, but they know how much better they are when he is on the floor.
There will certainly be times when they will need him to take over games, but for now, the Rose we saw was exactly what the team needed.
