The Golden State Warriors made plenty of noise this offseason, when they fired their popular coach and became a major player in the Kevin Love sweepstakes. While they kept their core intact, the Warriors have improved tremendously as evidenced by their hot start this season. Despite losing to the San Antonio Spurs, the Warriors can use the defeat as a measuring stick for how much further they have to go in order to meet their championship goals.

Unfortunately for David Lee and the Warriors, a hamstring issue has ailed the 10-year veteran to begin this season. Lee is no stranger to injuries, as a hip issue removed him from postseason play in 2013, in addition to Andrew Bogut missing last year’s playoff run due to a broken rib. While the Warriors are deep at both positions, they can't count on both big-men to be healthy and in the lineup – especially for the playoffs.

Steve Kerr made the right decision to shift Harrison Barnes into the starting unit in favor of bringing Andre Iguodala off the bench, as the third-year forward has responded well. After Lee went down with his injury, Draymond Green received the nod to start in his place, and he too has performed strongly out of the gates. Inevitably, the Warriors will be faced with the decision of choosing which forward to keep for the long-term future.

Mark Jackson’s departure from Golden State was controversial, especially after he guided the Warriors to their most success in over 20 years. Steve Kerr, like Jackson, was a first-time coach when he took over for the Warriors. Thus far, the team has responded to their new coach by improving defensively and continuing their trajectory towards the top of the West. It is early, but Kerr is going to be a favorite for NBA Coach of the Year honors.

After plenty of involvement atop the NBA rumor mill, Klay Thompson thrived as part of Team USA this summer. Thankfully, the Warriors ended any lingering controversy by signing Thompson to an extension, and the four-year guard responded by scoring 70 points in his next two outings. Thompson will have a chance to reach his goal of being an All-Star this year, especially if he continues to build on his play to start the season.

Speaking of All-Stars, Steph Curry has taken his game to the next level, also thanks to the Team USA experience. Curry’s play has earned him Western Conference Player of the Week honors, with averages of 26 points, 6.1 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game to start the season. As the clear-cut leader of this team, Curry isn't just aiming for the playoffs anymore; he’s aiming for a championship – that is what they call an MVP.
