The much-anticipated addition of first-round draft pick Kyle Anderson has yet to pay off. In three appearances, Anderson is averaging 1.3 points, 1.3 assists and three rebounds per game. He is obviously still adjusting to the NBA game and finding his role on the team, but he’ll need to grow up fast. The health of the Spurs may call for him to step up sooner than later.

It is evident early that the Spurs are getting everyone’s best shot since they are the reigning champions. Three early losses, one of which was a blowout, have shown the mortality and can happen if San Antonio isn't sharp. The Spurs don’t play for early-season accolades, so they aren’t concerned about the 4-3 start at all.

With players like Patty Mills, Tiago Splitter and Marco Belinelli hurt, the Spurs have been struggling to be as effective as they were last season. This has been most evident in their three-point shooting percentage, which has been at the bottom of the league this season.

Kawhi Leonard’s 26 points and defensive versatility against the Los Angeles Clippers was the defining factor in the Spurs’ victory. They are going to need him to be at his best if they’re going to take the West again.

The Spurs may not look that sharp right out of the gate, but they are still the defending champions. With wins over the projected contenders of the Los Angeles Clippers and the Golden State Warriors, the Spurs have shown that they are still the preeminent team in the West.
