The Dallas Mavericks are looking pretty competitive to start the season. They have all the necessary pieces to make a strong run, but they’ll have to be able to put it all together. It is still early, so let’s look at the five takeaways from the Mavericks’ early season play.

The West is stacked as usual. With all the competition, the Mavericks have the roster to earn a decent seed in the playoffs. Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler will provide the experience and guidance to win when it counts. With a few bounces and calls in the Mavericks' favor, a championship isn’t out of the question.

The backcourt of Dallas is deep. With Jameer Nelson on board and J.J. Barea back, they have a solid five-man rotation between the one and the two spot. Devin Harris, Monta Ellis and Raymond Felton (injured) will be a handful, especially if they are all playing well at the same time.

The additions of Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons are paying off immediately. Parsons gives the Mavericks a viable scoring option that can spread the floor with his shooting range and take defenders off the dribble. In the paint, Chandler provides consistent effort on the boards and has defenders second-guessing with his ability to block shots.

The Dallas Mavericks are third in the NBA in points scored per game this season (105.1). Despite only playing eight games, the Mavs can trade buckets with any team in the league. This could also be their downfall, since their scoring looks to be altering their focus on the defensive end.

It is pretty simple. Dirk Nowitzki is a legend. After 16 years in the NBA, he is still one of the most dangerous scoring threats around. His game is ageless, and the Mavericks are still relying on him to carry the scoring load. In eight games, he’s averaging 20.9 points and six rebounds per game. Nowitzki will go down as one of the greats.
