On Nov. 12, the Golden State Warriors reportedly waived former first-round pick Nemanja Nedovic, freeing him to pursue a career in Europe where he originally played. The point guard had yet to play during the 2014-15 season and only played 24 games during his rookie year, but the Warriors evidently saw enough to conclude that Nedovic did not fit with the Dubs’ long-term plans.

Those long-term plans primarily involve salvaging as much cap space as possible to prepare to extend point guard Stephen Curry and to re-sign either combo forward Harrison Barnes or Draymond Green. Now that shooting guard Klay Thompson has received a multi-year, close-to-max deal, all five Warriors starters, if power forward David Lee and small forward Andre Iguodala are to be treated as such, receive double-figure salaries, something unique to the Dubs. Although Nedovic’s $1.1 million contract isn’t much, the Warriors may need to scrap for cap space when attempting to extend Curry to a max-level extension in 2017, or if the Warriors decide to go all-in on a top-tier free agent, such as Kevin Durant prior to that.

In addition, the Warriors may want to clear a roster spot for one of the promising young guards currently playing in the Dubs’ D-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. In particular, point guard Aaron Craft, who played well enough for the Dubs during summer league to get an invitation to training camp, may find himself playing for Golden State soon enough. The Warriors are showing their desire to field the best team possible by continuing to reshuffle their roster to unearth untapped talent.
