Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin Needs To Cut the Tough Guy Act

I’ve been a fan of Blake Griffin ever since I saw him dominate against my (hometown) North Carolina Tar Heels in the Elite Eight in  2009.  It was obvious he was going to be good. I always liked Griffin’s easy demeanor; he was cool, even tempered, smooth — but now he’s (allegedly) getting into public disruptions in Las Vegas? What?! C’mon man.

It seems as if Griffin has felt the need to show the NBA, and now possibly the general public, how tough he is ever since last year’s (unfair) wave of sports media criticism strongly insinuated that he’s “soft”. The match to this fire being was lit by sports personalities Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless, who both said on ESPN’s First Take (July 2013) that some NBA players think Griffin is not tough and too soft; they said a lot more, but there’s no need to be mean.

Anyway, all the negative press obviously bothered the Los Angeles Clippers power forward and he has since become somewhat of a tough guy. You may have noticed over the past year or so Griffin reacts with a lot more of a hard edge when he is aggressively fouled. He gets in too many arguments on the court, and he’s even had a few (almost) fights with multiple players. All of this culminated in a harder attitude and now the overreaction in Vegas. Let’s be realistic; the only thing that actually stays in Vegas are the folks who live there. Pro athletes have to be smart at all times — maybe they need technical fouls and ejections from clubs and bars, too.

Griffin is a great player, who is capable of winning a MVP award one day, but first, please cut the tough guy act.
