The Memphis Grizzlies have been a perennial contender in the Western Conference for quite some time now. With Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Conley forming the core unit of their gritty style of play, the Grizzlies may have just enough to outlast the rest of the Western Conference this year. These are five takeaways for the Grizzlies, who are 8-1 to start the season.

The Grizzlies initially made a questionable decision by bringing in Vince Carter on a three-year deal this past summer. However, Carter appears to be a reliable option off the bench; he has already proven to be clutch by hitting late back-to-back threes against the Sacramento Kings during the team’s 26-point comeback performance. Carter is well-suited for his current role with the Grizzlies, who will need his scoring punch in the playoffs.

Last season, the Grizzlies started slowly out of the gates, as coach Dave Joerger struggled to capture the full respect of his team. After the Minnesota Timberwolves courted Joerger this past offseason, Grizzlies owner Robert Pera made a last-minute effort to keep the young coach in town at all costs. The move couldn’t have worked out better, with Joerger receiving full backing from ownership and having his players buy into what he’s selling.

Similar to how Isiah Thomas made the Bad Boys go, Mike Conley now does the same as the engine that ignites the Grizzlies. While Conley is good for 16 points and seven assists a night, it’s his standout defense that allows him to always have an upper-hand against the NBA’s elite guards. Conley, now in his eighth season, all of which have been with the Grizzlies, has been asked to do so much for the team this year, and he has delivered thus far.

Zach Randolph has been the pulse of the Grizzlies for quite some time now, as his arrival in Memphis coincided with the team’s prominent rise towards the top of the West. Courtney Lee joined the Grizzlies last season, finally finding a home as the team’s starting shooting guard following years of moving around the league. The two epitomize the current Grizzlies, using the large chip on their shoulder as motivation to finally get to the top.

The hardworking and hustle mentality that started with Lionel Hollins in 2009 makes the Grizzlies one of the NBA’s most distinguished teams. Most organizations are out to mimic the San Antonio Spurs’ model for success, and the Grizzlies have laid their own foundation to build upon. The grind-it-out mentality may be enough to lead the Grizzlies to their first NBA Finals, and with a long season ahead, they’re exactly where they want to be.
