The Sacramento Kings haven’t made the playoffs since the 2005-06 season, but have started this season 8-5 and have their best looking team in years. While there hasn’t been much to cheer about over the last nine years, here are five things that Kings fans can be thankful for.

The Kings are far from one of the best teams in the league when it comes to defending, but there has been noticeable improvement. Bad defense is a big reason the Kings have eight straight losing seasons, but this year Sacramento has done a better job playing as a team on defense. Solid rebounding has also helped improve Sacramento’s defense as a whole.

It’s still so early in the season, but Kings fans have to be happy to have a winning record for as long as it lasts. It’s hard to fathom, but the Kings haven’t had a winning record at Thanksgiving since 2004 and the team ended up winning 50 games that season. The Kings have a long way to go, but they have a chance to pull off the team’s first winning season in a long time.

There’s many who believe Gay doesn’t have much left in the tank, but he’s proving those people wrong so far this season. The Kings signed Gay to a three-year extension earlier this month and it’s good news for Sacramento fans. Gay is statistically on pace to have the best season of his career, and Sacramento needs another formidable scoring threat to go along with DeMarcus Cousins.

Cousins’ progression into one of the best big men in the league is extremely exciting for Kings fans. This season in particular we are seeing a smarter, more mature version of Cousins. He’s limited overreacting and committing technical fouls, and has really grown into the leader of this team.

If nothing else this holiday season Kings fans, just be happy that there’s still a team to support. For a while it looked like the franchise was at an end, but now it has been revitalized and the Kings are getting a new arena in the heart of Sacramento in a few years. This has to be No. 1 because without a Kings franchise, the rest of it doesn't mean much in Sacramento.
