Spurs Don’t Necessarily Need Ray Allen

Offseason talks about free agent Ray Allen have cooled down considerably, but every once in a while the discussion picks back up. Allen is the NBA’s All-Time leader in three-point field goals made and has made some of those threes in dramatic fashion. San Antonio Spurs fans will remember Ray Allen’s three-point shot in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals which pushed the game to overtime and eventually led to the only NBA Finals loss in Spurs franchise history.

Spurs fans remember that three any time Allen’s name is mentioned. Wouldn’t it be nice if fans in San Antonio could remember him for something other than ruining an otherwise stellar playoff run? Many have linked the Spurs and Allen as the 18-year veteran explores his options for returning this year.

The Spurs offense is predicated on taking a lot of threes, especially corner threes. Ray Allen can hit threes from anywhere, but he’d be wide open in the Spurs offense for a few corner threes each night. Again, Spurs fans know he can hit them, whether he’s wide open or whether Tony Parker has both hands in his face as the clock winds down in regulation.

Allen would undoubtedly be a huge addition for any team in the league, but the Spurs don’t need him. With Danny Green, Manu Ginobili, Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli, the Spurs have four guards that can knock down threes with the best of them.

But it’s Ray Allen.

The Spurs should still try to get him, but Allen would be more of a bonus than a necessity. The Spurs certainly didn’t need his three-point shooting last season with six players shooting better than 44% from three in the playoffs.

If he comes to San Antonio, that’s great, but everyone knows the Spurs can win without him.
