Mark Cuban’s Realignment Plan Would Work Well for San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs usually don’t work together with Mark Cuban. The Dallas Mavericks‘ owner has a lot of opinions and has upset plenty of rival Spurs fans with some of those opinions, but Cuban recently expressed an idea to realign some NBA teams to different conferences. His changes included moving the Spurs to the Eastern Conference along with the Houston Rockets, Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans.

Change means doing something different, and that might be scary to a lot of people, but this doesn’t look like it would change too much. In-state rivalries with other Texas organizations would not diminish, and the teams would likely remain in the same division. San Antonio would obviously play Western Conference opponents less, but they would start playing LeBron James more often and they would travel to Toronto more, which would be a nice fit with all the international talent the Spurs possess.

Spurs fans can’t ignore the fact that a road to the NBA Finals would no longer include the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers or Memphis Grizzlies (although, to be honest, it doesn’t make sense for the Grizzlies to stay in the Western Conference if Texas teams move to the East).

The Spurs are in the middle of the country, so there really doesn’t seem like there would be too much difference in travel. If anything, less trips along the West Coast might make it easier on the bodies of the Spurs’ Big 3 who will undoubtedly still be playing for the next 10-20 years.

Obviously, this is just a suggestion, and Mark Cuban is far from running the NBA, but if such a move were made, it’s hard to see anything but positives for the San Antonio Spurs and their quest for more championships.
