With only two losses 15 games into the 2014-15 NBA season, the Golden State Warriors are looking like they could potentially be a contender for a championship if everything continues to go swimmingly under new head coach Steve Kerr. Unsurprisingly, the performance of point guard Stephen Curry is one of the primary reasons for their success and promise this season.
Despite playing the second fewest minutes per game of his career to this point, Curry is having his most productive year in the league right now. In 32.7 minutes per game, the sharpshooting point guard is averaging 24.3 points, 7.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and two steals per game while hitting on 49.4 percent of his field goal attempts and 42 percent of his attempts from downtown.
As he sits in the middle of one of the best contracts in basketball—a four-year, $44 million deal—with the Warriors, there is already speculation about the future of the 26-year-old guard in the league. Prior to a contest against the Charlotte Hornets recently, Curry told Diamond Leung of Inside Bay Area that Charlotte is a destination that he has indeed “thought about.”
Curry has strong ties to the Charlotte area. His father, Dell Curry, offered his sharpshooting services to the Hornets during Curry’s childhood and Curry was subsequently raised in the Charlotte area. He also attended college at Davidson, not far removed from the city.
Curry, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, was expectedly non-committal about his future when discussing Charlotte. Curry said that he feels at home with the Warriors and in the Bay Area, but that Charlotte will also hold a special place for him as the place where he grew up. He added that the thought of playing close to home in Charlotte is something fun for him to think about.
This isn’t the first time the notion of Curry come to Charlotte has been heard out of the point guard’s mouth as he made similar comments back in August on a CBS Sports radio show while discussing the decision of LeBron James to return home to Cleveland.
The Hornets just locked up a point guard of their own this summer when they signed Kemba Walker to a big extension. However, it’s impossible to believe that they wouldn’t be open to the idea of adding a player like Curry, an instant game-changer and one of the best players doing it in the league today. It’s all speculative at this point, but the possibility is certainly intriguing and worth keeping an eye on.
