Dallas Mavericks’ Offense Performing At Unreal, Yet Sustainable Levels

The Dallas Mavericks always seem like a team that is connected to big-name NBA free agents whenever they’re on the open market. Part of that is probably the ambition of Mark Cuban, but part is also that this team is active in trying to build a team that can contend for another title.

While the Mavs weren’t able to bring in any players of the caliber of Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James despite their availability this summer, they were still able to add two major pieces to their roster by signing Chandler Parsons in restricted free agency and by trading for Tyson Chandler to anchor their interior like he did back in 2011 when they won the title.

While Chandler has performed well in his role at center, Parsons hasn’t really been worth the big contract that Dallas signed him to. There’s no doubt that he’s talented, but he’s had growing pains to start his tenure with the Mavericks. What’s crazy, though, is that the struggles of their biggest offseason addition haven’t stopped them from starting the year with a 13-5 record. If you’re looking as to how that’s happened, look no further than their offense.

Through their first 18 games of the 2014-15 season, the Mavericks have the best offense in the league by a comfortable margin. Dallas is currently averaging 113.8 points per 100 possessions. That’s 3.1 points per 100 possessions higher than the second-placed team in the league.

The instinct when you see that number—after getting over how impressive it is—is to think that it’s unsustainable. However, when you look at how their producing on the offensive end of the floor, that’s not entirely the case.

For one, the Mavs aren’t scoring at that rate simply because they’re playing at a frenetic pace. In fact, Dallas ranks just 11th in the league to this point in terms of pace. Even crazier considering their offensive efficiency is that they aren’t doing it by hitting a ridiculous ratio of their threes as they actually rank in the bottom-half of the league in terms of three-point percentage at 33.7 percent. A big part of their success offensively is the rate that this team is attempting three-pointers at.

The Mavs rank second in the league right now in three point attempts per game, taking 27.2 per game. Though 33.7 percent isn’t a fantastic percentage, it’s effective when you’re taking that many attempts. Normally you would expect the percentage to dip with such high volume, but that’s not happening with the Mavs and the results are obviously positive.

With the weapons throughout the Mavericks’ roster, it’s not hard to imagine them keeping this offensive pace for the rest of the season. Even more promising is that Parsons could still turn it around for them and add yet another weapon to their arsenal. People were high on the Mavs coming into the season and thus far, Dallas is making those people look quite intelligent.
