Consistency Is the Brooklyn Nets’ Biggest Issue

The Brooklyn Nets are 8-9 a little over a month into the NBA season, and while they are coming off a signature win over the San Antonio Spurs, this team has been wildly inconsistent so far. The Nets have a ton of talent on their roster but have yet to put it all together for even a full game.

The inconsistency shouldn’t be too much of a surprise considering the Nets have yet another new coach in Lionel Hollins. Hollins is the fourth coach in the last three years for the Nets which means another new system. What the Nets have going for them is that most of their core players are the same from last year so they should be a little more comfortable with each other.

The Nets did have to reintegrate Brook Lopez into the offense after he missed most of last season, and that has been a major work in progress. Last season Joe Johnson was the go-to-guy on offense for the Nets, but with Lopez back and Deron Williams fully healthy, Johnson’s role has diminished quite a bit.

It makes sense that the Nets are struggling early on, as many of the players are trying to carve out their roles and the team tries to find an identity. But with a team this talented they probably shouldn’t have a losing record.

There are times when the Nets look great, like most of the game against the Spurs, but then there are times when they look out of sorts like the end of regulation against the Spurs. In the first three quarters of most games the Nets run their offense, it looks smooth and guys are getting open shots. But once the fourth quarter comes, the offense becomes stagnant and the players seem to panic.

It is up to Hollins to improve the Nets’ fourth quarter offense so that they do a better job of closing teams out, and he has plenty of time to do so. The Nets are an extraordinarily talented team with a really good coach, and if they could figure out how to put together a full four quarters of solid play consistently they could dangerous in the Eastern Conference.

Even Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich believes that the Nets will figure it out, saying that they “will be a monster” as the year goes on. Hearing that from Popovich is the ultimate sign of respect, and it just shows that with more time the Nets can become a really good team. Figuring out how to become consistent won’t be an easy task, but if the Nets are able to do that, look out.
