New York Knicks Rumors: Fire Sale Is Best Possible Thing For Team’s Future

It was clear when Phil Jackson took over as president of the New York Knicks that he had a long, bumpy road ahead. Few predicted the road would be this bumpy early on. Through the first quarter of the 2014-15 season, New York has been atrocious. Just awful.

The Knicks are so bad at basketball, that there’s really no point in talking about what will happen on the court the rest of the way this season. They’ll be lucky to win 25 games. Maybe, if Derek Fisher‘s squad starts clicking on offense and the triangle begins to take shape, it’ll be worth noting. Maybe.

It’s with all of that bad basketball in mind, that rumors of a New York fire sale have started to swirl. It’s thought that everyone, with the exception of Carmelo Anthony, is on the block. J.R. Smith is believed to be the most likely player to be dealt.

In addition to Smith (who has one-year left on his current contract at $6.4 million), there are several other Knicks players with expiring contracts: Amar’e Stoudemire, Samuel Dalembert, Andre Bargnani and Jason Smith.

Jackson should basically take anything he can get for any of these players. Even a deal where the Knicks end up with late draft picks would be a win. Acquiring younger, more coachable players who better fit the triangle system would be a huge win.

It’s hard to see teams stepping over each other for any of these Knicks players, but you never know what could happen as the season winds on. No matter what happens with the Knicks the rest of the way, they’ll still be playing for the future. That’s why a fire sale, or at least an attempted fire sale, is definitely best for business.
