Will they or won’t they? That’s been the question surrounding the Boston Celtics and a potential Rajon Rondo trade for what seems like years now. The Celtics have held on to their All-Star point guard up to this point, but the cut-off for dealing him is rapidly approaching with this season’s trade deadline (Feb. 19).

With Rondo set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and a long-term extension still not in place, rumors are starting to swirl that the Celtics may just move him after all:

Trading Rondo really boils down to how lengthy of a rebuild plan the Celtics have. Are they trying to get back into serious contention in the next year or two? Or is Danny Ainge starting to think much further down the road?

If the answer is the latter, the smart call is to move Rondo in the near future. The asking price is rumored to be steep, but why wouldn’t it be three months away from the trade deadline? As the days pass, you’d have to think the Celtics’ demands will shrink. Because one possible outcome is Boston getting absolutely nothing in return for Rondo if he walks away in free agency.

With Marcus Smart (a realistic replacement) already on board and roster full of young players nowhere near ready to legitimately compete — do the Celtics really have much to lose by dealing away their top asset?
